I want each and every friend of mine, who owns a dog to read this post very carefully and when you are done, I urge you to share it with all your dog related friends. Before you do, please read this post with a question I sent to Performadog’s Nutritionist Bill Wiadrowski
This is one long post you will want to read to the very end, but here is a bit about us first.
In 2016 Myself (Shannon) and Brad made an informed decision to feed our dogs Performadog and within four weeks we noticed positive changes, at the time we had a 12 year old, 7 year old, 4 year old and an 8 week old puppy. We have been registered ANKC
breeders of German Shepherds for over 18 years, Brad has been a RAAF Police Dog Handler
for over 21 years, and I myself have a background in the Animal Industry as a Vet Nurse and Dog trainer
. It’s always been important to us to provide the very best nutrition to our dogs which led us to Performadog
after trying many many brands that are available on the market with no success. So here is a factual story of why we have and will always feed our dogs Performadog
from now on.
In early 2019 I allowed myself to be influenced by others and social media dog related groups that I shouldn’t be feeding my dogs this or that and I made the decision to change to a different brand of dog food, I will refer to this brand as Food A to prevent any negativity. Boy! That was the worst mistake we could have ever made and cost us a lot more in vet bills and not to mention the stress involved constantly having our dogs with minor health issues.
We started to see a decline in our dogs health and condition, we couldn’t keep weight on some of them which required more food and was costing us a fortune as we were advised to add so much more to their bowl and required hours of prep work each month, something Brad and I did not have time for with him working 5 days a week and myself on permanent night shift and 3 school age kids. But we persevered and would prepare a large quantity of raw food just to add to the dry food and although their weight improved that was the only benefit we saw. But we started to question why we needed to add all this extra raw meat, fruit and veggies when the food was supposed to be a complete and healthy diet.
This went on for 12 months until we moved interstate and we decided to change yet again to another brand of food (lets refer to this one as Food B) as we no longer had the sources to get our fresh raw products and not knowing if we could get them in the local area.
So this new Food B seemed OK, but the amount of food required each day was of concern to us, actually for a couple of our dogs given their lifestyle it seemed extreme and would see us whizz through a 20kg bag in no time. Let’s not talk about how much was coming out the back end either as it seemed more than half of it was being produced as waste.
But this Food B, something wasn’t right, I started seeing some significant skin issues in a couple of our dogs, and after making contact with the brand company it was suggested to us that we switch these particular dog to 1 of 2 different products, one was supposedly specifically designed for dogs with skin issues and we couldn’t believe it when after a short period of time it actually made their skin worse and we had to resort to weekly medicated shampoo baths just to relieve them of their conditions. It was a formulated diet that was supposed to alleviate skin irritations…
Here is where things get really interesting, in January 2020 one of our females gave birth to a litter of 10 puppies. I was informed that she would be hard to get into whelp due to phytoestrogen in Performadog or so I was told, and it would take at least 18 months after she ceased being fed Performadog that I would be able to consider putting her in whelp. Yet here she was, with a healthy size litter.
It was hard to keep weight on her during her pregnancy as the volume of food required just made it too uncomfortable for her in the last two weeks and we were constantly having to feed her to make sure she maintained a healthy weight and for the healthy development of the unborn litter of puppies.
Once these puppies were born it became even harder to keep up with her nutritional needs, we fought a very hard battle and I started to question why we were paying so much for a premium brand product that wasn’t doing what it said it would deliver. They had only been on Food B for a short period of time so I decided to give it the benefit of the doubt and keep them on it to see if things improved.
I made the huge mistake of weaning puppies to Food B and then eventually onto Food A (we included fresh meat and soft bones they could chew on) thinking surely nothing can go wrong.
THIS IS WHERE IT GETS INTERESTING!!!
From the moment they started on solids they just seem to hover slightly under an ideal weight, and the scratching omg! they always seem to stop in the middle of something and scratch, every time you looked at one they were scratching. It absolutely drove me nuts when i couldn’t find anything significantly wrong with them and nor could our wonderful Vet at their six week health exam.
Then at around seven weeks there was one particular puppy who stood out, not just because of her temperament or conformation but for all the wrong reasons. I started to notice slight hair loss, hive-like rash on her abdomen, it had been picked up at the 6 week exam that her lymph glands were slightly enlarged. I had a sneaky feeling of where this was headed and whilst we treated for the itchy skin, a week later out came the angry ear infection.
eight weeks old and this poor puppy had so much going wrong with her it was almost unbelievable. The next two weeks were horrific, the angry ear infection had cleared up but now we were dealing with something much more sinister, this poor puppy had swollen lips and ulcer like skin infection that covered her entire mouth (see pictures).
We were once again back at the Vets and it was at this time that I knew something had to change. The puppy was prescribed a ten day course of antibiotics and
I was to continue with washing and keeping her mouth clean and as dry as possible and no more Chicken. Her skin
got worse before it got better and there was a point were I actually expressed a concern for her ongoing health and how severe the reaction was given her age and discussed euthanasia, our awesome Vet advised us to hang in there with her. If this was going to be an ongoing issue this was no life for a dog to live. My other concern was that I needed to remove her from a chicken based food, that in itself was a challenge, given that the majority of dog foods and puppy in particular are made from chicken or chicken by-products.
After being at the Vets, I came straight home and began the dreaded search for a food that did not contain chicken. There are so many different foods available on the market, you could spend an entire day looking at the nutritional content
and comparing them and the majority of them contained chicken. Then I contacted Kris Kotsopoulos
to quiz him on Performadog puppy
, satisfied it didn’t have chicken in it. I ordered a 20kg bag and some Purple Boost
that day and haven’t looked back since. This puppy hasn’t had any major outbreaks like she did when she was younger, in fact she has the occasional chicken wing or drumstick to chew on without any repercussions, I will let some more recent photos of her speak for themselves.
