Rosemary Oil

What Is It?

Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis L.) is one of the most economically important species of the family Lamiaceae. Native to the Mediterranean region, the plant is now widely distributed all over the world, mainly due to its culinary, medicinal, and commercial uses including in the fragrance and food industries. Among the most important group of compounds isolated from the plant are the abietane-type phenolic diterpenes that account for most of the antioxidant and many pharmacological activities of the plant. Rosemary diterpenes have also been shown in recent years to inhibit neuronal cell death induced by a variety of agents both in vitro and in vivo.

This antioxidant effect of rosemary oil in combination with natural vitamin E is particularly useful in protecting our pet food. In the absence of antioxidants fats in the food react with oxygen and the resultant breakdown of the fats releases free radicals. Free radicals, in turn, attack more fat molecules and the food starts to lose its efficacy quite quickly. Rosemary oil, natural vitamin E and the foil packaging which is a hallmark of the Performadog range not only protect the food from degradation but effectively provide an oxygen barrier to further improve the keeping quality of the food. This means your bag of food will be as fresh as the day it was made when you first receive your delivery.

Benefits

Rosemary can help protect against cancer, according to scientists at Kansas State University in the US. Adding an extract of rosemary to minced beef during cooking can reduce the heterocyclic amines (HCAs), which are mutagenic compounds that form when meat is cooked at high temperatures. HCAs are carcinogens that can increase the risk of some cancers.

An international study found that rosemary contains an active ingredient that helps combat free radical damage in the brain. Carnosic acid helps protect the brain from stroke and neurodegenerative conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease.
